MAIT, the apex body representing India’s IT hardware, training and R&D services sectors has announced the appointment of Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice-President at Canon India Pvt. Ltd as its President and J V Ramamurthy, President and COO, HCL Infosystems Ltd as its Vice-President for the term 2011-12. The announcements at MAIT’s 28th Annual Session held at New Delhi today.

Highlighting MAIT’s roadmap for the future, the new MAIT President, Alok Bharadwaj, said “It’s always an honour to be leading MAIT. While the current times are quite challenging as growth in IT industry is slowing down, all fundamental & long term demand drivers for the economy are building enormous opportunities for IT industry. As a larger picture, While India has dominant presence in software and IT services sector, it is yet to build globally competitive IT & electronics systems design and manufacturing capabilities. The objective of both the Industry and the Govt. is to commence major transformation for India in the next 5-10 years in a 3 dimensional IT thrust. Firstly, by integrating IT in most of the economic activities to bring rapid improvement in efficiencies. Current level of IT penetration in India is low and Indians must consume IT more than anywhere else & anything else. Secondly, by playing BIG role in making India, a globally attractive manufacturing base of electronic & IT products with higher level in value chain as demand rises exponentially. Thirdly, by putting environmental care firmly as an integral part of growth initiatives, as we meet the fast-increasing domestic demand. It is not merely an act of benevolence. It makes perfect business sense and must be the strategic direction for the industry”.

“One good big change that is noticeable is higher level of Industry Government collaborations & consultations. MAIT is working very closely with Ministries of IT, Environment, finance & Commerce to build growth focussed stronger business as well as regulatory IT ecosystem in India” Bharadwaj added.

On his part, MAIT’s new Vice President, Mr. J V Ramamurthy, said “I am grateful to the industry for reposing faith in me. Indian economy is said to be entering another phase of exponential growth and development in the coming years and will see a sustainable high economic growth. IT & technology will serve as big enablers and legitimising India's status to emerge globally competitive in the hardware arena. A robust and encouraging ecosystem covering all aspects of the downstream industry will enable us to emerge as a strong IT nation.”
